What do you get when you team up one of the most legendary names in trance with one of the freshest producers of the the past year?

You get “The Ocean,” an absolutely gorgeous song driven by classical piano keys, heavenly vocal clips, ambient pads, and deep bass hits that will undoubtedly envelope your senses, taking you on a mystical journey transcending space and time.

I would imagine that every producer in the world is clamoring to work with Arty at the moment, and therefore, I was surprised to hear that this collaboration between he and Paul van Dyk had been a long time in the making.

“I met Arty in Russia sometime in 2010 and we talked at that point about making music together. That has led to two tracks on the album. On ‘The Ocean,’ I was sent over some strings and sequence patterns, which I was really feeling. I then came back in with other elements and it turned into this big back-and-forth mechanism,” says PvD of the collaboration. “Arty brought the topline, which is really harmonic and angelic and we used it really more like an instrument than a vocal. We both felt very strong about the parts that had gone in and I then took it and began to properly produce it.” – Paul Van Dyk.

This is the type of collaboration that I am most fond of. Often times, artists schedule a bunch of studio time in an effort to craft a new album, and set up time to work with different artists on collaboration tracks. In some cases, this type of collaboration can seem forced as it is on a deadline. The type of longterm collaboration that was utilized to produce “The Ocean” allowed the creative juices to continuously flow between artists — and the result is astonishing.

Paul van Dyk and Arty have crafted what will become one of my favorite trance tracks of the year. “The Ocean” possesses a quality of effortlessness that unlocks my mind to a starry world of tranquility.
