Alexisonfire – “To A Friend” (Adventure Club Remix)

I can’t even begin to describe the memories that this song brings back — days long gone that I’d give anything to relive.

Most of you have probably never heard of Alexisonfire, because, well, let’s put it this way, they are possibly the furthest thing from EDM imaginable. They’re a post-hardcore band from Ontario, Canada that was in their prime during my high school years. Call them my scenester days, my hardcore days — whatever! Yes, I listened to a lot of really intense music, but that music was all brilliantly artful and incredibly complex. Alexisonfire was by far one of my favorite bands during that time; a band that exuded creativity combining melodic hardcore riffs, and heart wrenching vocals in order to break free of the “emo”/”screamo” clutter.

It’s been years since I’ve listened to this song, and I’m incredibly thankful that Adventure Club has the same appreciation for music that I have. I feel like these guys really get me; I can only speculate, but I do feel like we have a lot in common and that they are guys I would hang out with.

Their remix of Alexisonfire’s “To A Friend” does a brilliant job of capturing the original track’s power and emotion. Beautiful synth lines, heavy beat, piano keys, smooth vocal integration, clever vocal chops — overall pretty simple, yet very elegantly produced. This is exactly the reason I hold so much love for Adventure Club. There’s always some measure of constraint in their work; a knowing of where to draw the line.

Stunning.

When this track hit I got it linked to me from a friend, but not one that was in the EDM scene nearly as heavily as I am. It was an Alexisonfire fan that I’ve been friends with for quite some time. Their recent announcement for a reunion/farewell tour sparked some interest apparently. Being from St. Catharines, the hometown of Alexisonfire, I have a certain connection to them from before they were a world wide hit in the post-hardcore scene. They’ve always hit home and this track does the same, but in a new light. For the lack of any original comment, its brilliant and beautiful.

I look forward to seeing them in Toronto in December and until then I would gladly settle with such wonderful works of art like this one.

Thanks for the comment Chadd! They truly are an absolutely brilliant band, and I’m so glad that guys like Adventure Club are willing to reach from beyond the EDM veil to show respect to other genres.
